Well, I took another look and I have to confess, this is a case of what Clabert calls "movie magic".

However, the illusion was assisted by very effective sound effects of sliding metal as Magua (apparently) flicked it open.

So I'm still inclined to believe that this represents a telescoping haft, and the question remains--are there any historic examples of the type?

: I took a *very* close look at it yesterday before I posted, and it was my clear impression that it was a telescoping shaft similar to those collapsible drinking cups we had in the cub scouts.

: (This was DVD, checked frame by frame with my son at the controls, and he saw the same thing.)

: But, I'll double-check and get back to y'all.

:
: : : The one in the "Ambush" scene.

: : : Didn't see it mentioned in the script.

: : : Now I know there's a lot of attention to historical accuracy in the movie. (OK, so Chingachcook's gunstock warclub is a bit on the large size.)

: : : This telescoping tomahawk is unusual, to say the least, and gimmicky--I can't imagine it would be in there if there weren't some pretty sound historical provenance.

: : : Anyone know what it is?

: : _____________

: : Scott,
: : I think the way that Magua lets the tomahawk "slip" down and into his hand to grab the end, as Clabert says, the ridges on the handle may make it seem like a telescope. Never thought of that. Intersting. Never ceases to amaze me the different things one sees in this movie.
