I LOVE Spam. The kind in a can, not the kind you get in your mbox.
I grew up with Spam. Spam in the morning, Spam for lunch sandwiches,
Spam at night studded with cloves and maple syrup and baked. Growing up with a 1950's single mother it was a cheap meal, and kids loved it.
Especially THIS kid!! Still do, but it is horribly bad for me. High in fat and cholesterol. But yummy! John Cleese notwithstanding.
It is closely akin to Taylor Pork Roll. You New Jersey folks probably know about THAT! I love that too. Sad sad sad, the Taylor Pork Roll place closed on Ocean City Boardwalk five years ago. They used to have a long pit flaming with gas and lava rocks over which they put the yummy round little slices in baskets to turn from one end to the other. Start at one end, take them off done at the other, pop them one or two onto a bun add mustard and mmmmmm mmmmm good.
They stopped grilling them over fire years ago, and started grilling them on flat grills......not as good. But the old Taylor Pork Roll place could still be seen right where it always was on the OC boardwalk. From the time I was 7 or 8 right through HS and college, the Army, marriage, kids that wonderful Boardwalk landmark stood there. Then, one year, we went there and it was gone. OC wasn't the same after that. Only worse thing they coulda done was take away the ocean itself. *big big sigh*
I don't care what anybody says, New Jersey beaches are the best on the East Coast. Lovely long stretches of white sand, great wave action, convenient nearby loads of shops and eateries.....yay for Joisey!!!
