feasgar math bho Alba!
Good to hear from you, Dr. Uncle Mark/Malcolm/Many Flags!
Firstly, it was a GREAT PLEASURE to meet you, to get to know you and to join you around the campfire!! We learned much about MANY things and, unfortunately, not enough about others! (One day, we SHALL find out the recipe for 'Ping', mark my words!) Yes, it's a great way to learn about a most interesting period in history - why, you hardly know you are 'learning'!! :o)
Secondly, I agree with you re: authenticity in movies. But I believe that first and foremost, when all is said and done, Hollywood makes movies to make money! They find a story that they think will lend itself to attracting movie goers, take a germ of the truth and mix it with some exciting half-truths and ‘just a couple’ of blatant lies, add a big movie actor in the lead role et – voila! You have a movie, one which bears little resemblance to the true story, ‘authenticity’ has rather flown out the window but – it heightens our sense of pride in our national identity and we come out of the movie feeling all’s well with the world!
In 1997, it was ‘Braveheart’ that pulled at the Scottish sense of pride. Last year, it was ‘The Patriot’. Both lacking in much ‘authenticity’ but it gave many of us the impetus to check things out, find out something closer to the REAL story, and learn a little more about history. The movie makers made their money and we… I think we just have to remember that, it’s JUST A MOVIE! And it’s up to each of us to decide if we want to sieve through it to find the ‘rights’ and ‘wrongs’ of it. And hopefully, for many of us, it will be the first foot on the road to ‘learning’ about what really happened.
Thirdly, I CAN’T WAIT to read the ‘Fourth Chronicle’!! I foresee a lot of ‘twists and turns’ in this one – a lot of ‘soul searching’ and LOTS of emotional moments! Ooooh, I can’t wait!!!
‘Sgt. MacWilliam, Pvt. Gunn, and the rest of the 77th Grenadiers will be traveling in three weeks to Bushy Run to relive the battle that occurred there in 1763… Pontiac’s Rebellion… Want to know more about this? Let me know!!…’
Want to know more??? WANT TO KNOW MORE??? OF COURSE, we want to know more!!! What a question!! *harrumph!*
By the way, if you were REALLY writing as Sgt. MacWilliam, you would be spelling ‘traveling’ with two ‘l’s! :o) [Not that I’m ‘splitting hairs’ or anything, ‘cause I don’t do that, do I, Rich? :o) ] Just reminding you that our favourite Scottish MacWilliam Son would spell it the British way! :o)
Thanks for everything, Dr. Uncle Mark!
Aye! ‘Pax’ to you too!
‘Sith’,
Kate.
