: Jane, it occurs to me that there is a fascinating book called "Albion's Seed: Four British Folkways in America", by David Hackett Fischer, which deals with the tranplantation of cultures, folkways, etc. from different regions of Britain to different regions of America, and there subsequent persistence here and effect on American culture.

: Whether it would specifically address your folks I don't know, but it's worth getting a copy from the library.

: I'll put a link to a synopsis of the book below.

Thanks for bringing this one up, Scott. 'Albion's Seed ...' is a must read for any who are interested in the origins & evolution of the paradoxical American psyche. The book is, expectedly, somewhat controversial. I think it's largely due to the steady back-tracking of Fischer to the regional British seeds of the 'American experience' & his thorough dissection of the W.A.S.P segments that continue to bear their influential marks upon this nation's identity. He upset the revisionist apple cart, I suppose.

We'll have to add this one to the Book Store, as well!

Elaine
