Jane, it occurs to me that there is a fascinating book called "Albion's Seed: Four British Folkways in America", by David Hackett Fischer, which deals with the tranplantation of cultures, folkways, etc. from different regions of Britain to different regions of America, and there subsequent persistence here and effect on American culture.

Whether it would specifically address your folks I don't know, but it's worth getting a copy from the library.
