: ABOVE: What's wrong with this picture? Taken at roughly 6:30AM on June 14, 2001 at the Greenknob ... Answer below!

: I'm not one for musicals. Oh sure, I enjoyed "The Sound of Music" and "My Fair Lady" well enough. Saw "Hair" on Broadway ages ago, and that was good ... but, really, I don't often like musicals. Something about stone-faced actors suddenly bursting into song ... I don't know ...

: BUT ... received a copy of "1776," from one of our Colorado friends not too long ago, and made myself a promise to watch it on the 4th of July. Though, obviously, the subject matter was of interest, I had huge reservations about whether or not I would actually enjoy watching Ben Franklin sing ...

: I LOVED IT! When John Adams first let loose a melody, I was taken aback ... oh no! Prior to starting the video, my son, Chris (15), did a preview for me of what this would be like. Here it was now, on film. Too funny. I was laughing out loud at the similarity to my son's earlier performance. Once I settled in, however, the film began to fully absorb me into it. The music was fine, and usually quite unobtrusive, but the story ...

: What a subject! The movie, somewhat humorously, focus on Adams, Franklin, and Thomas Jefferson, but covers the whole of Congress as they fight it out over the matter of Independence. There is a feeling of intimacy, as we get to watch the squabbles, some petty; some not so, and get to meet, up close & personal, many of our forefathers! It is a refreshing look at not only the events leading to the signing of the Declaration of Independence (itself a masterful & emotional moment), but into the characters themselves. We see them as they really might have been. REAL people. One of the highlights is the debate over the slavery clause (consequently striken from the document). Knowing, as the viewer does, the future ramifications of this decision, makes it all the more powerful.

: Good stuff! Thank you, Colorado!

: More good stuff ... Did you see "Boone & Crockett: The Hunter Heroes"? Very enjoyable! If you missed it, keep an eye out on the History Channel ... it's bound to run again, frequently! The 2-hour "docu-drama"-type production was nicely filmed, very informative, and a visual treat. It tied in "The Last of the Mohicans" to both segments, once again demonstrating the lasting power of Cooper's novel(s). What an impact they have had on our continuing fascination with the longhunter & the American frontier. The depiction of Crockett's death at the Alamo may surprise some of you, but it is fast becoming, based on first person documentation, the accepted account. Good to see Mark B. & David W.!

: For those of you still Gathering bitten, we have added more photos to the Gathering 2001 pages, courtesy of some of you, so look around. There are still more on the way ... more video, too. We expect to have all that up by the end of the week.

: Kicking around ideas, suggestions, & itineraries for a possible 5th Gathering in 2002. Doing some of it out loud in the Gathering section, if you'd like to listen in ... much more, down the road!

: OK, about the above photo ... of the 18 people there (including me, who took the picture), 5 of them are NON-US citizens ... 5 out of 7 who, by my count, attended the 2001 Gathering - Mary G., Rob, Adele, Ilse, & Kate. The other 2, Martha & Bertha, were on their way to this location, but turned back at Bear Den road, mistakenly thinking they still had an hour to go & would never make it. So, really, we would have had 100 percent non-US participation at this very early Gathering kickoff. Compare that to about 14% - 15% US participation. My point? I don't know, but it sure says something!

Oh goody, goody!! More statistics!! :o)

Shoot!! I WANTED to see 'Boone & Crocket: The Hunter Heroes' - but... I don't get the History Channel. Hiss Boo!!

Okay, I'm off to check the new pics on the Gathering Pages - I'm afraid I'm one of those folks not yet 'switched off' from this year's Gathering.

Thanks for the review of '1776' - I LOVE West End musicals (well, like music, I like some, don't like others) so I must see if I can get hold of this one.

Thanks for the update!
Later, 'gator,
Kate.
