#21 - Many people in Rutherford County (the home of Chimney Rock) believe that The Great Emancipator, Abe Lincoln, was born in the little town of Bostic, NC.
Around the turn of the 19th century, a homeless, unmarried woman, named Lucy Hanks, wandered from family to family in the Rutherford County area. During this wandering she gave birth to two daughters, Nancy and Mandy. When Nancy was 10 years old she was sent to live with the Enloe family on Puzzle Creek, because Lucy could not provide for the girls properly. The family later moved to Oconoluftee and as a teenager, Nancy became pregnant, supposedly by Abraham Enloe. She was sent back to Puzzle Creek. After she gave birth to a baby boy, gossip regarding the child's parentage reached Abe Enloe and he arranged to have Nancy married to a sawmill worker named Tom Lincoln. Lincoln was paid a fine sum and told to take the girl and her child to Kentucky.
Tom Lincoln was a medium height, stocky man and many people find it hard to believe that he fathered Abe. Abraham Enloe had another son, Wes, that bore a striking resemblanc to Lincoln.
Books and newspaper articles have addressed the issue of Lincoln's real place of birth for years. Check out the website at http://www.blueridge.net/~chadm/ for more info and pictures. I'll try to include the link.
