To,
Col. John Armstrong
Ft.Augusta
Commanding
Dearest Uncle,
I know it has been some time since my last correspondence and for that I'm truly sorry, the rigor of my duties leave me little time for anything else. In saying that, I hope you will understand the brevity of this post. As your well aware, with the weather,so must we war. I was given orders to make for Carlisle to assist the QuarterMaster obtain supply and deliver orders. Whilst there, I found a moment to drop in on my Mother. She is well and sends her love and appears to be in good spirits. I must inform you that she it delighted to hear of Ian's transfer to your Regt. and states that she is forever in your debt! But the purpose for this letter is that whilst at my Mothers dwelling I took notice to a large coin hanging from her neck. When I inquired to it, her eyes began to tear and she told me of a visitor at her door of whom claimed to have served with you and also knew of my Father. He was dressed poorly and looked to have been to long between meals. He remarked that he was a Junior Officer of yours and was with you at Kittanning. He said that he had traveled far to deliver this in person and felt honor bound to give it to such a courageous woman. When she asked his name he said nothing, but only responded with an honorable bow and then excused himself, turned and walked off and disappeared into the evening. If you know of anyone that meets this discription,I wish to thank him for he has unknowingly given my mother some closure in her mourning for my Father! I must close for now as to return to my duties.
Your Most Humble Servant
Edward
