Seamus MacWilliam, along the trail to Shippen's Fort
31 May, 1759
My Dear Seamus,
Please pardon the brevity of this note. Yours has just been delivered by courier and we have Native runners heading out shortly with missives from the General, and I desire to give them this dispatch in hopes it reaches you before you get too far along the trail to the Carolinas.
I am unable to attain leave because of the impending expedition being planned by General Amherst, about which I can say no more in case this note falls into the wrong hands. But Seamus, by such a happy coincidence, the General needs a trustworthy courier to deliver messages to the Governor and others (for reasons I cannot divulge, as they are secret), and my dear Major has put me forward for that task. He has also given me permission to find you in the Carolines to rest while en route! And so, I will see you there, on 14 June if all goes well.
As to your other queries, I have heard rumblings of dissatisfaction amongst the merchants in our most recent supply train, something about their being forced to give all to the King and calling themselves robbed by the Crown, rather than seeing it as their duty. They say their possessions are theirs and not those of the Crown, and they will take the matter up when the war is over. So, I will try to find more in the short time before I leave, and we will talk about this when I see you.
My best to Malcalm, Quasi, and Many Flags and Davey and all the rest, whom I hope to see also! It will be so good to be with you all again.
Your friend and humble servant,
Chauncey
