# 19 - Stoneman's Raid refers to events which took place in the later days of the Civil War in which Union troops ravaged and pillaged the hillsides of Western North Carolina.
Union Major General George Stoneman set out from eastern Tennesee into the Western mountains of NC. Beginning in the Banner Elk /Boone area he swept south through Blowing Rock to Happy Valley and Patterson (Tom Dooley/Dula country) and then split his forces sending a contingent through Lenoir and on toward Morganton under Brigadier General Alvan Gillem. Gillem's troops progressed through Marion (the heart of MohicanLand) with a goal of reaching Asheville. Wanting to avoid General James Martin's Confederate Battalion in Swannanoa Gap, which he had learned about from bushwhackers (tune into tomorrow for an interesting story on them), he headed farther south and headed right up Hickory Nut Gorge. The troops are said to have marveled at Chimney Rock as they followed the Rocky Broad river up the gorge toward Hendersonville. Gillem did meet up with Martin's troops, and having previously met and admired the man, they exchanged regrets over the war and Gillem was allowed to pass on through Asheville to Greenville, Tennessee. Before he could reach Greenville, TN, the war had ended and he was dispatched south to South Carolina to cut off the escape of Jefferson Davis. This ended Stoneman's Raid.
Few lives were lost with this campaign; however, millions of dollars of property damage were suffered by North Carolinians.
If you'd said time would crawl so slow,
I wouldn't believe ya.
But, in two weeks and a day.
we'll be bunkin' at the Geneva!
Have a good four day work week!! (For most of us, anywho!)
