#17 - The only fortifcation built during the French and Indian War in NC was Fort Dobbs, near present day Statesville in Iredell county. It was dismantled in 1764, a year after the signing of the Treaty of Paris.
The fort was constructed in 1756 by a company of provincial rangers commanded by Hugh Waddell and was named in honor of the royal governor of the colony, Arthur Dobbs.
The only attack ever attempted on Fort Dobbs was by a party of about 60-70 raiding Cherokee Indians that were quickly turned back. The exact location of the fort has been determined by excavation, although experts are unsure of the what the fort looked like. The historical property can be visited today with several demonstrations held throughout the year.
We'll roll into the gorge,
In days numbering 17.
Then we'll all be real happy,
To have Emily and Kevin seen!!!
(Missed you last year McGowans!)
