GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD Mo-'nin MohicanLand,
#12 - Bat Cave, located just a little farther up the Hickory Nut Gorge on Hwy 64 past Chimney Rock, is believed to be the World's Largest Fissure Cave. No one knows for sure how expansive it is because it has never been entirely mapped out. The main room of the cave is 85 feet high and over 300 feet wide. Most caves are formed by water seeping through limestone, but fissure caves are faults in the earth's stone content.
Bat Cave used to be home to a great flock of bats, but most have been driven away or killed by marauding visitors. These folks have also destroyed other delicate plant and animal life at the cave, as well as marring the walls.
The cave is now privately owned and protected by the North Carolina Nature Conservancy. They conduct limited guided tours by appointment only.
