24th April 1759
On the Road to Fort Frederick
Journal Entry:
The weather is grand! I awoke early, before the sun was up, unrolled myself from kilt and blanket, took out my day book and decided to write a few words before the Captain orders Silas and I to form up the men. I still usually refer to the 1st Sgt. by his rank instead of his Christian name, but in private we call each other by Silas and Malcolm.
The men are in high spirits. The Captain has hinted that extra rum rations are in order once we arrive at Fort Frederick (our dear Uncle Quasi squealed at that news, and we could hear Uncle Angus laughing from the forest, sheep bleating, oh, those Uncles of mine!!). We met a traveler yesterday, who was moving fast. As he passed us, he shouted out that he was on his way to the "Freddie Fair". In curiosity, Brother Gunn asked what that meant. As he outdistanced us, he shouted back that hundreds were gathering at the Fort for a great Fair. This is news to us and all the men are as excited as newly wed brides. Their expectations are high and the joking and tom foolery is rampant. Ahh, but the men deserve this, after all the hardships and danger they have met.
Drummer Armstrong is up and standing in place. Silas is now telling him to beat assembly. So, I must close and inspect the men. We will be off again after a quick breakfast. Two more days and we should arrive at Fort Frederick. We wonder what this Fair will be about?
God Save the King! Pax Aye!
