: : If Chingachgook and Uncas were ficitonal characters in the book, why is Uncas referred to in the letter from Seamus posted on this site on the 17th? I found another article on the web that credits Uncas with creating the tribe in the early 17th century after leading a rebellion against the Pequot Indians.
: Dear Lory,
: Here we're getting into literal history of the tribes, and that is not a strong point with me. I know Uncas was a traditional tribal name, and that there was, historically, an Uncas. However, the characters in Cooper's novels are based on various concepts and prototypes, but did not exist in reality. As to Chingachgook, the prototype may have been an Indian named Tschoop. There is information on him in our Mohican Musings section and fairly extensive discussion of him in the Archives. This is where I have to ask for help from Elaine and Rich. Their historical knowledge and familiarity with the Mohicanpress website far exceeds mine.

Hi Gayle,
We posted nearly the same time ... For a little bit on Tschoop, Lory might try the following link. I wrote a little on this page about the Mohicans (including Tschoop) who once lived in the Hudson River Valley (present day Pine Plains).
Hope it's enlightening ...
