4th April 1759
Camp at Reastown, Ft. Bedford
Journal Entry:
At the request of Capt. Croy I have been inquiring as to the true identity of this man currently lodged in the guardhouse. It would appear that it is Major Grant, who was captured last year at Ligonier by the French along with 19 other officers, and not an imposter. My investigation has revealed that he was exchanged shortly after his capture. Why a man such as him would become a common thief is beyond comprehension.
Whilst I was interviewing him, a possible explanation arose, and likely will become his defense. After the defeat at Ligonier and his capture there, Grant blamed the loss on the Provincials and scouts, and saw a chance to perhaps even the score a bit, so to speak, by trying to shift the blame for the disappearing haversacks. His intent was to throw it off onto the Pennsylvania Regiment, but he hadn’t realized that he was dealing with the cousins!
Pax aye!
