: : I decided I just HAD to ask a question that has been bothering me for some time but was afraid to ask (I HAVE been looking over the various pages on the site but can't find any mention of it)...
: : Were 'Sharitarish' and 'Ongewescone' REAL people -
: Tsk tsk, Kate. SHAME on you! Indeed, in the musings, there is a piece about Uncle Wiscone & his line at the Fort,

I KNEW you'd say that!! THAT'S why I was scared to ask!! :o)
I was SURE I'd read about it somewhere but when I went back to find it, I couldn't remember where I'd seen it and I looked at various 'pages' and then thought perhaps I'd made a mistake...
:...hence, my sense of it is that Uncle never really existed.
Well, I'm glad that MM included that character and put in that scene - I think that that particular scene in which Hawkeye asks Ongewescone if he is staying, is one of my favourites. It really shows the true strength of loyalty that the Native allies had for the 'side' they chose to fight with, even thought they knew that 'resistence was futile' - even when it meant they would most probably die. So little spoken, but so much said... I really like that scene!
And if 'Uncle' is not a real character, then I would think it unlikely that Sharitarish will be real either, as we don't even see him... Ah well, I guess it's what they represent, that counts. Still, if anyone KNOWS...
Thanks, Rich
