: "Fort George (of Last of the Mohicans fame) in New York State had an
: interesting circa 1740 time piece in their collections many years ago. It basically was a sundial with a little cannon barrel and magnifying glass attached to it.

: You would load the cannon with powder and set it along the sundial for the time you wanted it to report.  If the sundial was oriented correctly, at the appropriate time the sun would shine through the magnifying glass onto the touchhole of the cannon barrel, thus setting it off."
