Wow, Nea...these are really good questions! And ones that I don't believe we've discussed here before. I'm hoping that someone can give you (and me) some answers, here. As to Magua's insults being hurled in French, I've never thought about that before. He obviously begins speaking in French because Hawkeye (through Duncan) is doing so in order to communicate with the Sachem. Why he ends up doing so, I'm not sure, unless it's just so that everyone present will hear and understand his thoughts on the Sachem's ruling.

And I haven't a clue what the Sachem actually says when he tells the Hurons to take Duncan instead of Cora. I've always just assumed it was something akin to "Very well..." or maybe even a Jean Picard-like, "Make it so..." Surely we have someone on this Board who can translate better than that.
