8th March 1759
Fort Bedford by Reastown
Journal Entry:
I must grab a few moments as the guard changes here on the Fort. We are still at the alert, even moreso now that another alarm has been raised due to a missing person. Also, another one of Halfbreed's comrades has come into the Fort, a man by the name of Speedy. He tells us that Halfbreed, a man named Dink, and some others are on their way to the fort. They had an unsettling experience, something about chickens in the snow, this Speedy mumbled and was very distraught about this chicken story. We could not make heads nor tails out of it and this Speedy is now with his friend Parson, talking quietly in a corner of the stockade....'tis a strange tale I believe this Speedy has to tell, when he is ready.
But, I must quickly tell of this missing person. The tavern wench Pam who once got me in hot water with the Captain, has disappeared. She has not been seen for a night and a day. Some of the townspeople believe they saw her heading off to the forest yesterday afternoon to gather some wild herbs and such for soup, since the snow here has begun to melt. But, this morning when several of the townsmen, drunks they be, banged at the tavern door to get their daily ration of ale and rum, Pam was no where in sight.
We fear the worst. That this stinking fiend Redbud has somehow done the tavern wench harm. Oh! The Captain is bawling for me, so I must be off, changing of the guard it is!! Calsious Shatto continues to fall in with us, in ranks. The 1st Sgt. and I are determined to collar him and find out his story!
God Save the King!
