: : Howdy,Kate!
Howdy, MMMM!
: : Don't forget one point...Hawkeye uses the term "ANYONE" following our trail. Not "expert HURON trackers" or "eagle-eyed Ottawa (Ottowa?)." Perhaps, as Bill said, he was worried enough about them being tracked as it was, without having to leave behind graves that would point out to even those daft Frenchmen that they'd passed that way. Just a thought. And I also like Bill's point about the time it would involve. We see that night just how close behind them their enemies are.
Yeah, I agree that time-wise, it would be just plain stupid to stop and bury their dead. But - I feel, particularly in light of the fact that the British and French are at war, there would be QUITE A LOT of 'tracking' and 'looking for clues' when coming across something like a burnt out cabin. I would think that ANY 'followers' would search to try and discern who had been there before them. I would think it would be a natural thing for anyone to check for foot/mocassin prints. And I think the ladies' and British soldier's boot prints would be a dead give-away! (As would an encircled print!)
: : Also, as for Hawkeye "snapping" at Cora, I've always thought he was so overcome with emotion over the death of his friends that he should be cut a little slack in that regard.
Yeah, I would agree that it's a natural thing to snap at someone, when you are distressed by the death of a loved one. But - I'm inclined to agree with you that he should have told her to 'just shut up and keep marching until he told her she could stop!' Then, in the Burial Ground, he could have told her that there had been no time to do 'the decent thing' - THAT I could have accepted as the natural thing to say and do.
: : I've always loved that moment when he comes back to her with that tear glittering in his eye, and that lump in his throat that makes him swallow hard before he can even speak. But then I DO pride myself on being a true connoisseur of the subtle DDL gesture or look, doncha know!
Oooooh yeeeees, I LIKE that moment VERY much!!!! I think that that is one of the most 'sensitive' scenes in the whole film.
: Hey, I think you've started the most ardent debate we've had on this Board in a long time. Good on yer, Mate!
Well, that was a point that just kept 'jarring' every time I watched the film. And the more I thought about it, the more I thought that it just didn't make sense to me! However, I thought it might be an idea to 'open the discussion to the floor' - find out what others thought or find out if I was justified in thinking what I did. Or was I just 'nitpicking', when I should just sit still, keep quiet and ENJOY THE FILM!!
BUT YOU KNOW ME, MISS!! Why keep quiet when I can 'stir'!! ;o)
: MMMM
: PS...you can STILL stay with me this summer, even though you and I will probably have that serious disagreement! ;o)
hehehe!! Thank you, Miss!!
Kate.
