A Message to Many Flags and ThreeTales
near Allemangel, County of Berks
Colony of Pennsylvania
My dear Cousins,
I have heard that Half Breed and his party are on the trail of Red Bud, and are headed toward Raestown to warn Cousins Malcolm and Davey.
Nancy and I had gone to Ft. Augusta to get some provisions, and to visit with young Timothy, Gloria and Baby Benjamin. Timothy is doing well, and enjoys working in the Commissary at the fort very much. He has been recently appointed to be the head of procurement there. Captain Trump is well-pleased with him.
Cousins, Timothy told of us Half Breed being there just a few days ago. He said that Half Breed was all worked up and quite anxious to get on his way, since he had figured Red Bud was moving toward the west, and he felt it was only for one reason.....to murder Malcolm and Davey. He told me, too, that Red Bud had been seen by a hunter a couple of weeks ago crossing the Susquehanna just to the north of the mouth of the Loyalsock. The hunter told him that he had first caught a horrid odor on the breeze, and then he heard this strange babbling and could not understand it. So, being cautious, he concealed himself inside a hollow tree until the creature passed him by. He described Red Bud perfectly: short, fat, naked, painted red head to toe, and muttering to himself incoherently. He said that while he fears no man, the sight gave him the creeps, and the chill of death could be felt hanging in the air. The hunter thought he made out the words “some ass”, but I believe he was saying, “Seamus.“ He noted, too, that the hideous being was limping, and as he passed by the hunter’s hiding place, the man could see a long cut-like wound across his exposed left buttock, which he said looked like a bullet crease. That was from my shot at him as he fell when he attacked Nancy! I knew from the blood on the snow he had been hit, and now I now where. Ha ha! Got ‘im in the arse!! How appropriate! Red BUTT!!
Cousins, I know we have sworn off campaigning, but, in this case, where we all are in grave danger, as are our loved ones at home, I have decided that I am going to take up the tomahawk and rifle again, and go after Red Bud. My wounds are all healed, and my strength has returned. If you wish to join me, I am leaving Augusta in two days time and heading south and west to Raestown to join Half Breed, Sly and Dink, and Malcolm and Davey. I have made arrangements through Timothy to procure horses and provisions for us...or for me, should you choose not to go... so we may waste no time in getting there. I am leaving Augusta on the 3rd inst., at 5 AM, whether or not you are here.
Pax aye!
