Uncle Many Flags and ThreeTales
We have been following the trail of the savage Red Bud as it leads west by southwest. We crossed the Susquehanna River last week at Shamokin and have followed the ridges to the southwest towards the Juniata. We are now in Sinking Spring Valley between the Bald Eagle Ridge and Brush Mountain. Yesterday we happened across a small community burial. The victim's name was Maxwell Williams, and the relevance of this will be clear later in this letter. He had been out cutting wood and was expected home by dusk. When he did not return home after dark, a search party was formed; but he was not found until daybreak.
They found him naked, and tied to a tree. He had been painted black from head to foot, scalped, burned with a red-hot iron, and shot through the heart.
By questioning some of the locals, Sly and Dink have concluded the deed was the work of Red Bud. The tavern keeper reported seeing a short fat native in his establishment just prior to the disappearance of Mr. Williams. He had been asking about a family that might live in the area; and here is the reason for Sly and Dink's conclusion. Mr. Williams did not use his full Christian name, but shortened it to "Max". Dink feels the name "Max Williams" was misinterpreted as "MacWilliams" by the native, and thus the reason for the attack and the identification of the attacker.
Red Bud has killed another innocent being. This village has been victimized by the savage we are tracking, and we must capture and eliminate him swiftly. His trail is leading us south, and Speedy feels he is headed for Raestown. We are now hurrying to reach the stockade at Raestown to aid Davey Gunn and Malcolm MacWilliam. Parsons has gone ahead to warn them of the impending confrontation with Red Bud. We must move swiftly.
