in her book "Tidings from the 18th Century", Beth Gilgun suggests that when sewing a shirt by hand all the seams should be backstitched, as the backstitch is stronger and will hold up better to lots of wash and wear. The French seam and flat-fell seam are both acceptable. The flat-fell seam was commonly found on shirts. I highly suggest getting "Tidings From the 18th Century" as it is a wealth of information on 18th century clothing and sewing.
: So, I'm finally making BTs longhunter shirt. I've made a prototype on the sewing machine, but of course, this one has to be made by hand. Two questions: 1) are French seams acceptable? and, 2) is there a particular stitch that should be used other than the running (quilting) stitch? In all the reading we've done, we haven't come accross anything that would help on these two subjects. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, NS
