Okay, now you got me thinking......you are gonna probably regret you got me going here. Bear with me.
Actually, the date for the end of the world is probably already determined. The sun is burning its fuel at a calculable rate.
We know what happens to a star during its life-cycle. At some point, it will go red giant, which will pretty much fry the closer planets including ours.
Or, all the various celestial bodies are fixed in their paths, and the space junk (comets, asteroids etc) have their somewhat predictable orbits around the solar system. Gravitational pull determines paths, and it could be calculated, if all the bodies were catalogued, when two orbits might intersect.
The big imponderable is the crap from outside our solar system on vastly bigger orbits or uncharted paths affected by unknown or uncalculated factors that could visit us and slam into us with little or no warning. That one is surely in God's hands and only he knows. One thing is sure, either we will fry from our own star, or someday we will get slammed by a visitor big enough to cause widespread damage and extinctions. We have been hit before, we WILL be hit again. Sometime.
But not for a while yet, so eat, drink, love and be merry. Let's Party!!!!
Besides, we can always hope, as Bruce Willis (aka Harry Stamper) did, that NASA has guys just sitting around thinking sh-t up for such cases.
