Corporal MacWilliam......
With luck and the providence of St Andrew you will be handed this message at first light. Due to a chance meeting on the Laurel Ridge we are sending this last warning of the advance of French troops in the direction of the stockade on Loyalhanna Creek. Angus stumbled across these two lads from the 60th Royal American Company out foraging for meat. He insisted they return at once to warn of the gravity of your situation. I misjudged the number of troops at the Conemaugh, and now believe there to be as many as five hundred French soldiers and one hundred savages under the direction of Red Leaf. I emplore you to be on the ready, and not be caught resting on your arms when the strike begins.
We were able to skirt around the French by traveling across the Ridge last night in the darkness. Angus put his best ewe (whom he calls "Mother") out in front, and with sharp shouts of "ewe....Mother ewe", we were able to cover much ground and are now within one day of your location. As an amusing note....while resting at Wipey's Cabin night before last, our conversation lead to our looking forward to seeing all the friends and relation we have missed these last few months. At every mention of Seamus's name, the ewes would waggle their tails and ears. Do you suppose they associate his name with the incident at Carlisle last spring? They are truly an amazing animal.
hopeing our next correspondence to be face to face,
John MacKay
