Camp at Loyalhanna

My Dearest Magdalena,

I trust that you received my message of several days ago. Sign Talker has returned here to this camp telling us of his trek to your home and of his quick visit with my brother Three Tales' wife, Two Bottle. Sign Talker always makes our life interesting. He returned with many goods which he bartered for in Reading and Carlisle on his way back from delivering my last message. He has set up his sutlery on the edge of the Highland camp, trading geehaws, rick rack and fol-der-all which the soldiers have little of. But to more serious issues.

I received your answer from Sign Talker, the answer to my last message. He signed to me that after you had read the parchment tied with the thong, you gripped his arm and in tears assented to our bond to be forged before your father and God. I am joyful over this and although it will be difficult for me to leave the roaming life, I have already talked with several of the provincials who are willing to sell some land so that we may begin a homestead. As you know, my aged parents who live north of you in the Allemangel area, have always been farmers, so this life is known to me. I will make you a fine husband and will provide for you and the many "kinder" I hope we will raise.

Three Tales and I had some words with our dear cousin Seamus early this morning. It seems that he is headed north to his home to be with his Nancy as soon as the business is ended here at Loyalhanna (some are now beginning to call it Fort Ligonier). Seamus wants us to accompany him, before we head back to Berks to be with all of our kin and loved ones. Tales and I, in a courteous manner, explained that we could not accompany him on this journey and now Seamus has been pouting all morning. His moods are really making us wonder about his mental condition. One moment he speaks nothing of love and romance and the next he his pouting and whining. Tales and I are as romantic as the next man, but being a product of our German father, we keep many of those thoughts in our hearts, not wearing them on our sleeves and spouting them to all that will listen. My words of love are meant only for your ears, Sweet Magdalena.

As I promised you in my last message, Tales and I will leave this place within a fortnight. An impending battle seems to be in the wind, but if it does not occur within the week or so, we are headed home to be with our families. At that time, I will speak again with your father, the Pastor, to seal the date of our marriage.

May God be with you and keep you safe until we are again together.

Many Flags
