I'm not sure if this part has been covered, Carina, but Duncan very clearly says to the Sachem, "Moi pour elle," (pahdon mah French...spelling)...which I believe translates to "ME for her." Which indicates to me that Duncan has every intention of giving up his life so that the woman he loves can be with the man she loves. He has no doubt figured out by that time that she stands a better chance of survival with Hawkeye, and his strong sense of honor demands that he make the sacrifice himself.

When Hawkeye asks Duncan, "Did you tell him?" and Duncan says yes, you'll notice he pauses slightly & gives Hawkeye a significant look, which to me means he's thinking to himself, "Yes...I told him what I needed to, whether it's quite what you asked me to tell him or not."

Make sense?
