It was a great feeling early this AM, sortin' the ole mail at the Post Office, seeing all the headlines of the local papers claiming, "State To Take Dupont Lands," etc. etc. An effort well worth it!!! I don't know how many of you actually participated, but know your efforts have been rewarded. I don't know how long this process will take, but if it's gonna be within the realm of possibility, The River Walk WILL be on the agenda for us come next June!
From the Hendersonville paper,
"The N.C. Council of State
voted unanimously to use the
state's power of eminent
domain to force South
Carolina developer Jim Anthony to sell the land he owns in
the middle of the state forest. The move came after a
90-minute meeting in which Anthony defended his
proposal to provide public access to the land, a plan state
leaders denounced as inadequate. ...
As early as today the state is expected to deposit a check
for $12.5 million in Transylvania County Superior Court as
a down payment on the land. The N.C. Clean Water
Management Trust Fund, meeting Monday in Boone,
approved the funds. Juries in Transylvania and Henderson
counties will ultimately decide how much Anthony and
other landowners are paid."
Thanks to Friends of The Falls for making this happen!!!
