Ft. Loudon
Aug ye 25, 1758

Friends,

I caught up with some of the Augusta Regiment here at Ft. Loudon, and have joined them on their march to Reastown. There are thousands of troops, massive herds of cattle and horses, and supply trains strung out from Shippen’s to Harris Ferry, and as far ahead as we can see. It is said that 8000 will be the count for this army when it is all finally assembled. There are tents and huts thrown everywhere. There are troops from Mary Land and Virginia, as well as our Pennsylvania Regiment. I expect to see Sgt. Toot and some of my friends from Col. Weiser’s battalion, and have already run across some scouts I have known from other campaigns. It would seem that just about any man capable of bearing arms is headed for Ligonier and on to Du Quesne.

Everywhere you hear drums....

Ba-rump pum pum
Ba-rump pum pum
Ba-rump pum pum pum
Pum pum pum pum pum

Ba-rump pum pum
Ba-rump pum pum
Ba-rump pum pum pum
Pum pum pum pum pum.......

.....and on and on and on incessantly. When I lay down to sleep I hear the cadence, 64 steps a minute, in my mind’s ear and it is constant. It would drive a man wild if he allowed it. But I know it is the only way to move the masses of men we have to move and, therefore, is necessary. I presume that the regulars, like Malcolm and Davey, William Johnston, and Sgt. Toot are used to the drums and do not hear them in their sleep, however, someone like me, who is used to the peace and quiet of the woods, minds them much more.

The drum is the means of communication in the army. It can be heard over the din and chaos of battle and is used to communicate commands from the Colonel to the troops. It signals orders for troop movements as well as commands to prime, load and fire. Without the drummers, there would be real chaos! And so we put up with them.....

Ba-rump pum pum
Ba-rump pum pum
Ba-rump pum pum pum
Pum pum pum pum pum

Ba-rump pum pum
Ba-rump pum pum
Ba-rump pum pum pum
Pum pum pum pum pum.......

...and yet it is so exciting!

Well...would you believe...there are Many Flags and ThreeTales coming this way! I must go...I will post again soon.

Pax Aye!

Seamus
