hi Gayle,
I've studied the Lenape (Delaware) language a little bit and I think I have a little help for you. The Lenape word for Pidgeon is "Amimi" pronounced ah-may-mee. I don't have much help for Bumppo's other names, but for Hawkeye, the word for sparrow hawk is "sėnihėle", not sure on the pronunciation, and I don't know the word for eye. Hope this helps.

: I know some of you out there have some pretty good knowledge of American Indian languages and dialects, so let's see if anybody can give me some help.

: Cooper used a fair number of actual Indian names, as well as the English translations, in his books, but he never gave us the Delaware words for Natty Bumppo's various names. Can anybody figure out what the Delaware words would have been for Straight Tongue, Pidgeon, Lap-Ear, Deerslayer, Hawkeye, and Pathfinder, and how they would be pronounced?

: Gayle
