: Just one more post this evening...
: I'm sure some of you remember the PBS series "Liberty!" which aired back in 1997. If you have a chance, pick up the CD with the same title done by fiddle player Mark O'Connor. I was introduced to his music because he's a friend of my father's, but this is by far the best thing he's done. The music is haunting...and he performs with Yo-Yo Ma, Wynton Marsalis, and James Taylor. Favorite track of mine is "Johnny Has Gone For a Soldier," with Taylor singing. But all of it is very beautiful and moving.

: And the other day I was going through some of my old books from when I was a kid and found one that was one of my faves. It's called "Rebecca's War" by Ann Finlayson, and is a wonderful story of a teenage girl who is left alone with her young siblings to fend for themselves in Philadelphia during the Revolution. An injured young British soldier is billeted in their home and they become friends. Has some great historical detail, interesting characters and is just plain fun to read whether you're a kid or an adult...would be particularly good for a child between 9 and 12 who is interested in the Revolution.
Thanks for that Christina,
I LOVE Mark O'Connor. I have his CD "Fiddle Concerto" and play it often. I'll be sure to look for the one you've mentioned!
