What was the purpose of camp followers?

I'm sure the term was not regarded as a compliment. What did these ladies do? Were they just prostitutes or more? And how did they figure into the logistics of the army? What I mean is since they were not military personnel, who fed them when the army was in the field, and what happened to them if the army was surrendered? Did they go to the prison camp too? They obviously were not permitted to sleep in the tents with the soldiers so where did they sleep and were they even permitted into the camp at all?
