: : : However, a little info you might NOT be familiar with! In 1750, Flora married Alan MacDonald, and Officer in the King's army and she and her husband emigrated to North Carolina, where they took active part, as loyalists, in the American War of Independence! They later moved to Nova Scotia, having lost everything by supporting the British and several years later (1779) she returned to Scotland where she lived until her death (in Floodgarry, Isle of Skye) in 1790. A sheet in which Bonnie Prince Charlie slept, was used as her shroud.
: : : (Today there exists the Flora MacDonald Academy, in Red Springs, NC., named after her).
: : ALthough FMcA is no longer a college but a private children's school, each October the Flora MacDonald Highland Games are held on the campus. I have a feeling that this Games is closer to the type of event that is found in Scotland in contrast to the enormous Grandfather Mt. Games held in July.
: : This general area of North Carolina abounds with Scottish names. And a MacLeod was the first to fall at the battle of Moore's Creek Bridge, if I'm remembering correctly. But Montcalm County? I hope not!
: Thanks so much for the info Kate! NEAT!
: Just to take the Flora MacDonald thing a step further... There are at least two well known Flora MacDonalds that participate in the Grandfather Mtn. Highland Games. One of these is Flora MacDonald Gammon(her neice is also Flora MacDonald Gammon)who I later found out lives RIGHT HERE in Greenville, NC. I'm not sure of her connection to the afore mentioned FM (but I will find out), but this one's brother co-founded the GMH Games in 1956 (he later returned to Scotland).

Oh yes, Diana!! It would be REALLY interesting to follow Flora's influence on the area and to know if any of Flora and Alan's descendents reside in the area. They had 4 children and the articles I've read about her mention only Flora herself returning to Scotland. Her husband, I believe, remained in Nova Scotia. But - where are her children and THEIR children and their children's children ...??
Yes, if you can find out more, I for ONE would be really interested to know more!!
