: Dear Vita,
: Yes, I understand what you are saying, but, reading your response, I am not sure if you understood what I said. You'll get no argument from me on the fact that war takes a terrible toll on everybody involved and that the highest price is paid by the civilians. However, my post was not about that. It was written in the light of our debate on the (im)possibilities of compensation. In that view, and because I have been studying WWII history for some 20 years now, I found your Dresden argument the most thoughtprovoking, which is why I picked up on it.
: Vita, I don't quite see what points are served with your post, except that it points out something we had already established and agreed upon: war is cruel and humanity is capable of any kind of atrocity.
: Furthermore, you suddenly seem to make a giant leap from compensation to punishment, which, in my opinion, are entirely different things.
: Ilse (who really appreciates this exchange of thoughts and viewpoints BTW)
Dear Ilse,
Hmmm, again we have some food for thought, here. As Bill R. said, it is great that we are "talking" ... for the "pen," among reasonably civilized people, that is, is mightier than the sword. And of course while we have mentioned many other nationalities in this thread, the connection is still 6 Degrees LOTM ... how? Well, other than its romance and music and vistas, what is one of the strongest points in LOTM? The human bonds formed... gallantry... the difference between the charaters' nationality and upbringing... the cooperation in the name of the common good... hey, this is what we are doing here on the Board... we are forming bonds despite our differences and via 6 degrees LOTM, working towards the common good which stems from communication, understanding, tolerance...
hmmmm....

As Bill said, I can be offended, I can feel my free speech is strangled, my train of thought is stymied, or I can think about how best can I 'justify' my post... after all, if you have not understood me, I have failed as a communicator.
To be continued ....
Cordially yours,
Vita
