It's been a while since I posted, so, a big hi to everyone. Clark, what a great question.
As to why nobody else jumped, maybe it was fear of death. I remember being flabberghasted that anybody jumped. The first time I saw the film it was shock. One minute they're bemoaning the powder situation, the next minute Cora's telling Hawkeye to save himself. I thought he knew a way out that was treacherous, one that the women and the wounded would never have been able to manage. Next thing Hawkeye's jumping. It was very dramatic and not what I expected.
I think most mere mortals would have serious reservations about taking such a plunge. Granted, I'm a chicken, while Hawkeye, Ching, and Uncas are near-gods (or possibly bored woodspeople who jumped off the falls for fun when thing got a bit boring, therefore experienced in such matters), but my guess is that lots of us would think such a jump would mean certain death. Just imagine jumping into the falls as depicted in the film, and onto those sharp, pointy, rocks. Ouch!!! Alice didn't try it, that should tell you something.
I pesonally would rather take my chances with Magua. Is it possible I'm confusing Wes Studi, the handsome actor, with Magua, the handsome but vengeful, overly aggressive Huron? ... sometimes I get confused, but either way, I definitely would not have jumped. Nope, no way, no how.

: Hi all, I'm another newbie... I absolutely love Mann's LOTM, one of my all time favorite films. I have one question about it that I've never been able to answer to my satisfaction, though. It seems like it must be a pretty basic question, so I apologize if this one's been tossed about too many times already, but I couldn't find it in the archives in a cursory check.
: When our heroes hid under the falls and Magua's search party found them, why did only Hawkeye, Uncas, and Chingachgook jump to escape? WHy did the others stay behind?
