If I remember correctly the tour I took in the port caves in Porto, Portugal (how's that for alliteration), there are 3 ages for port: young, middle age, and old. I am pretty sure that "tawny" refers to the old age port, and I think they let it age for about 30 years.

By the way, if ever you want to travel a bit more South, try Turkey, try Bodrum (Halikarnas) which is at the corner where the Aegean meets the Mediterranean, and my son is there, handsome darling young man, about the wed his third wife, hey, this kid had two marriages and two divorces and his two ex' still adore him as the best friend they ever had...
anyhow, so, go to Halikarnas and my kid, Kurt Bekem aka Kuki, will love to walk you around...
