I think it's in the script that the Hurons are shocked that a white man would just stroll into their village; must have been some sort of insult or something to just walk in, uninvited.

: In response to the "LOTM initiation" party I had last night, two of my friends had the following question, which is actually one that could clear up some stuff for me as well: what is the reason Hawkeye has to go through getting knifed, bludgeoned etc. on his walk into the Huron village? Does that happen because he is a white man entering the village on his own or because he must go through some sort of proving of manhood or whatever to stand before the chief? They didn't quite understand that and I never have either...also wouldn't he have been weak from the loss of blood from getting hit by that war club?
