Do you know, I still can't finish the book because I know Uncas is going to die and since Uncas in my mind's eye is Eric Schweig, I just don't want that to a happen. Elaine keeps telling me it's inevitable and I should just finish the book, but I figure if I don't, then he/they will remain immortal. How stupid can I get??
To Sarah and all the lovers of the Cooper characters:
Okay all you sentimental folks - I'm going to let you in on the secret of Immortality as designed by James Fenimore Cooper himself. Same principle as watching the movie a hundred thousand times.
First you read The Last of the Mohicans - Uncas dies. Then you read The Pioneers - Chingachgook dies. Then you read The Prairie - Hawkeye dies. That's why Cooper wrote The Deerslayer - so his grief-stricken readers could go back and meet Hawkeye and Chingachgook and young Uncas just starting out in life. So all is well, and they didn't really die after all. You can do like I do and just keep reading around the cycle forever! Follow their adventures to your hearts' content, and then go back and start all over again.
So finish the book, Sarah. You deserve the unmatchable pleasure of turning your grief into joy when you then go back to the romance of Chingachgook and Hist O Hist in The Deerslayer and read of the entrance of Uncas on the scene.
