After several weeks of trying to figure out the title of this book, I've decided it can't be helped...I must bow to those of superior knowledge (you!) and ask for explanation, please. (Since I'm starting my last attempt at reading Cooper with The Leatherstocking Tales, it will be way too long (if ever) before I get to this book to discover the answer for myself, so I'm hoping you will indulge me here.)

What the heck does that title mean??? Is this the story of a town (Wish Ton Wish-on-Avon or something) wherein the citizenry (The Wept) are miserable and perpetually crying??? Or is it the story of a person (Ms/Mr Wish Ton Wish) who has in her/his possession that rarest of objects, The Wept? I give up! *me, singing here, "Help me, Rhonda, Help, Help me Rhonda...help me Rhonda, yeah, get it out of my mind!!" (Note: substitute "Gaylee" for "Rhonda", of course!)
