: I agree,Kathy. I think the DOPER perspective is how he wanted us to see Alice.
: : It's interesting to me that a lot of people didn't come away with that image, in spite of his efforts.
: Yes, I find this interesting, as well. Until the Foo-Foo Uprising, I never considered that anyone might see it differently at all. Contrary to what some may think, I'm not angry that others might interpret it differently, just surprised.
: :There could be a lot of reasons for that. Maybe it's the editing, or camera angles. I tend to think that because her character was left so much in the background, it invites all sorts of interpretation. Personally, I think that is one of the things that makes it fun to watch the film over and over.
: Well, it certainly gives us something to talk about, anyway! ;o)
: : Same with Alice's relationship with Uncas. You're free to decide the depth of their feelings, because there's nothing on the screen to settle it. In my opinion, even Uncas's efforts to save Alive could be open to an interpretation other than romantic love. But I prefer the romantic angle.
: Here I agree with you. I definitely think we are supposed to perceive Uncas as smitten with Alice, and therefore, determined to go after her, no matter the cost.
: : Hawkeye and Cora are portrayed in such a powerful, straight-forward way, it's a nice contrast to leave the Alice and Uncas shrouded in a bit of mystery.
: And in this, I can agree, too. It goes back to Mann's decision to have one central romance, and a lesser-developed, peripheral one. It gives you Schweiggers & Foo-Foos much more opportunity to see it as you want it to be, as well. As the decision to leave out Hawkeye's proposal to Cora at the film's conclusion does for me. I much prefer watching the expressions on Hawkeye's face as he asks his question to Cora & then nods at her response...I can write my own dialog to that tender moment.
: Frequently the best things in films are those left to our imaginations.

Hi MMMMarcia & Kathy,
Yes, leaving it all up to our imagnations (what a wonderful tool imagination can be). I wrote something similar a bit earlier today.
Have a great evening.
