Hi, Sarah...at last here is a topic that DOES rely on opinion or interpretation. You are right, she is looking around as they walk along. However, my feeling was that it emphasized how "out of it" she is...just gazing out across the space as though she were on a nature stroll. To me, the expression on her face looks as though she has gone faa-aar away.

And when she shows emotion as Uncas & Magua fight, what I see is that she recognizes here is someone who can help her, but then sees he is getting the worst of it in the fight. She walks out on that edge, looks down & sees it's TRUE, Uncas is lying down there dead, and all hope is gone, and then, looks back at Magua with that expression of clarity from having made her decision, and jumps.

Obviously we are not going to change each other's minds on this issue, but I feel compelled to state the case for the "other side" when these posts hailing Alice as brave come along. I'm not trying to be rude or argumentative. Just want to present both sides of the issue, especially since Elaine can't post right now, as I know she would want to, in the interests of a balanced board.
