Kathy, I think Rich's point is that even if you discount Cooper altogether, which I personally DO, looking at what Mann directed and Jodhi portrayed, Alice is not a strong person by any standard I ever heard described.
Rich said:
Alice, as MANN portrays her, is, to my mind, devoid of all semblances of strength. Suicide is weak, cliff battering or not.
This is where we get into such big differences, Kathy. I agree with Rich absolutely here. (Thanks RRRR, for being a fellow DOPE with me!) I think any society that portrays suicide as the brave way out is in big trouble, personally. And let me say again that all of my feelings on this movie come from the film itself, and are in NO way colored by anything Cooper ever wrote. I love the movie, and judge the characters therein strictly on what I perceive them to be feeling, thinking, or doing. And that is based on Mann's direction and the capable acting of the stars.
I would love to hear what Jodhi May thinks of Alice.
