Actually, that's a point to consider.
Indeed to his tribe he wasn't. Neither to the Hurons. And of course having done the breakfast-time-unmentionable deed to Gray Hair, to push for Cora's b-b-q, was overkill. While he killed Uncas in self-defense, there's a lot in favor of his fate in Ching's hands.
But yes, the mother of his children must have seen him as a hero for he had avenged her children's murder.
