but to me, from the get go, he is not much more than a deaf, dumb and blind minion. Deaf because he doesn't hear the obvious truth when Cora says flat out that she doesn't love him at the very beginning (hello!) before even meeting Hawkeye, dumb because he almost kills Chingachgook when they are acosted on their trip (duh!), and blind because he is a pawn of myopic English empirialism. English officers didn't necessarily earn their appointments either. They often were either born into it or paid for it.
The guy was a selfish liar. It is just as well that he got toasted as I don't doubt that had he survived he would have ended up getting them all killed down the line. He was lucky to have Hawkeye mercifully give him a deadly shot when you consider that had others not intervened both Hawkeye and Chingachgook would have been dead because of his actions.
Sheesh.
