: Being aware that DDL is Irish, and also hearing his Irish accent in "Name of the Father", I kept remarking to my husband, while viewing LOTM for the first time that the actor's american accent was remarkable. However, in two places, I thought a wee-bit of brogue could be heard. They were l) the line that Marcia said is one of her favorites when he replies to the English Officer that he's "beholding" to no one. 2) scene in the fort when he's asking the colonial militia members if they plan to leave the fort....they ask if he plans to go...he responds he has a reason to stay...colonial asks if the reason wears a green skirt & works in the clinic(whatever it was called)...to my ear when he replied " yes and she's a hell of a sight prettier than you so & so."
: Did anyone else hear it??? Otherwise, his accent was perfect, although I wasn't aware the wonderful word "ain't" was used in the l700s. He used it while walking alongside the river on the way to the fort. I thought it sounded out of context....maybe it was common usage at that time. Any language experts in the group?....ann
In the canoe, when he pleaded "faster", he sounded very Irish to me. On TNT, small clips were shown of Stowe and DDL. They gave their feelings about the characters they had portrayed in LOTM. To me, Daniel Day Lewis sounded oh so British as he talked of Hawkeye's courage. But he sure sounded Irish for the part of Conlon in "In the Name of the Father". I think his natural speech sounds more English than Irish, but that a wee bit of the old brogue slips in, here and there.
