Katherine,
The cliffs are on the north western corner of Lake George in New York State. In the book, Cooper was very geographically specific in every location and movement of the action, and you can take a map of NY and literally follow the path of every action in the novel. I enjoy using a map with a story based in history, and I have been amazed at the accuracy with which Cooper used the actual terrain in every book. Even such features of the landscape as certain trees and rocks and specific formations of the lakeshores and mountains are still to be seen exactly as he described them.
