Ok, Ann...I take back my query as to whether you've seen the Irishman...but all of your above comments merely attest to the fact that DDL's acting is so superb it IS, indeed, hard to believe you are watching the same person in each role. That's the point...he BECOMES the English fop, the punk teenager, the debonaire Victorian society heir, or the impossibly romantic frontiersman. You are not supposed to watch In the Name of the Father and be thinking about how wonderful DDL looks, and whether or not you "want that!" Those other parts were not played from that angle at all. I'm sure it's partly directorial guidance, and partly DDL's own gift for breathing life into each unique character, but certainly Christy Brown was never intended to make we gals suffer heart palpitations, and surely the political injustices perpetrated upon Gerry Conlan and his family were the focus of In The Name of the Father, not DDL's sexuality.
Maybe there *are* many other actors who could play Hawkeye... only problem is...I can't think of a one who wouldn't suffer severely in comparison to Daniel's portrayal. Not ONE. I'm a big movie buff and I really admire the work of MANY actors, but try as I might to envision any of them doing this role, I draw a blank every time.
Well....you ASKED for our opinions, so there it is.
