: Please don't shoot me with a virtual reality musket:o) but ever since watching LOTM, I've wondered why DDL took on the role of Hawkeye. Being non-american, why wasn't he intimidated by the fact that "Last of the Mohicans" is considered the first bonafide American novel and therefore its hero the lst fictional AMERICAN hero???....any thoughts?.......ann
I read that Michael Mann actually approached him to do
the role, and DD-L turned him down several times before
agreeing to play Hawkeye. He said in an interview once
something to the effect of "I don't know why he asked me,
since nothing in my previous work was remotely like the
character of Hawkeye." Mann said he wanted him because
he was a brilliant actor, and had the stature and dignity
that he wanted for the character. (Besides looking remarkably
toothsome in a loincloth, natch!)
