: I'm sure in the years since this board's been created there has been a discussion of whether there could be a sequel to LOTM. The first movie's original box office total would most likely determine the answer. Of course, other matters to consider would be are the original stars interested and is there a story worth developing in the other books in the same series written by James Fenimore Cooper. Daniel Day-Lewis seems like a purist to me and might not be interested in again portraying Hawkeye.Could someone tell me if this subject is discussed anywhere in the archives??.......Ann

Ann,

I would love to see Mann do "The Deerslayer". However, having done the most dramatic of the five books first, it would be hard to bring it off. Cooper continued the series because of America's fascination with Natty Bumppo, but Mann would have to use DDL because it is the DDL characterization that has captured America's fascination with the Hawkeye character. DDL, on the other hand, is expanding the wide range of his acting ability and I don't get the impression he would allow himself to be typecast, particularly if a follow-up had the possibility of being anti-climactic.

On the other hand, just as Cooper trapped his hero into romancelessness (I do love to play with "ness" words, don't I?) by having him die celibate in an earlier-written novel, Mann has trapped Hawkeye in time with Cora and could not very well go back and depict a similarily satisfactory romance with somebody else. At least I don't think so.
