Hi Patty!
Actually, the feminine white hands and awkward way of kissing are really authentic to Cooper's Hawkeye. Although feminine and white were not the words used, Cooper noted a number of times through the Leatherstocking Tales that Hawkeye's hands showed none of the signs and misshape of a life of hard labor. I guess Cooper was suggesting that the life of a hunter and scout supposedly had a little more class to it than farming or smithing or something. Anyway, the original Hawkeye had hardened, but apparently, sexy hands. However, being a romance-free hero, he apparently never kissed a woman until he was around forty, when he fell in love with Mabel Dunham. Yeah, "awkward" would have been the word! Mann stayed pretty close to Cooper in his depiction of Hawkeye.
